Working on raw canvas, Joanne Handler starts every painting with a whirlwind of mark-making. She dances around the canvas with various tools and implements, setting down a ground that, after many additional layers, illicits little gifts of texture, pattern and language. Alternately revealed, partially hidden or completely buried, these pearls add an element of mystery to an already inexplicable narrative.
Stars, stripes, mountains, oceans and outer space are just some of the elements featured in the vibrantly hued landscapes of each of Handler's paintings. She occasionally incorporates collaged elements, found objects and tidbits of a personal nature, as well as figures culled from her own fine art photographs. While propounding such narratives as hope, memory, time, motherhood and empathy, Handler prefers to let the viewer make their own inferences.
Joanne Handler lives and works in NYC. A selection of her paintings are represented by Saphira and Ventura Gallery and Maison 10 Gallery, both in NYC, as well as The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton, NY. You can find her work online at 1st Dibs, Artsy, Saatchi Art and Singulart.
